Beresford Square market, early 1930's. This part was known as the High Pavement. The Arsenal main gate can be seen in the background. Gas lamps, and later naptha flares, were used after dark until electric lights were introduced. Saturday night was the busiest time when food was sold off cheaply. On Sundays local preachers and political speakers could be heard in the square. The Market square is now traffic free.

Main gate, Woolwich Arsenal, probably before the First World War. A horse-drawn tram with open roof is clearly visible. The lack of market stalls indicates that this is a Sunday scene.
